BACKGROUND
Founded in 1978, the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS), is the organization in Canada that is at the forefront in the celebration of Black history and Black heritage with a demonstrated record in the study, preservation, and promotion of Black history in Ontario. A registered charity, the OBHS is also the only Ontario Provincial Heritage Organization with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport devoted to Black history and heritage. The OBHS is a B3 organization (Black led, Black focused, Black serving). Our organization hosts our notable annual Black History Month Kick-Off, annual

THE OPPORTUNITY
The OBHS is seeking an experienced Manager. The successful candidate will work with staff and the Board of Directors to manage events and programs, administrative duties, and community outreach.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reports to: the Board of Directors
Human Resources and Office Administration
• Supervise office staff and volunteers
• Provide training and professional development of staff, interns and summer
students
• Supervise the office team, provide guidance and support
• Foster a positive work environment as per Ministry standards free of racism,
violence and bullying
• Ensure compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and all other applicable
laws
• Maintain a safe, office environment and liaise with property management
• Maintenance of office technology
• Bookkeeping – submission of payroll and all office generated revenues, grants
and event sales, bank deposits
• Support compliance as related to the OBHS constitution
• Responsible for ongoing, regular communication with the Board of Directors
through the President and other Executive Committee members for informed
decision-making and planning
Event and Program Planning/Marketing
• Develop budget, operating plans, and evaluations for events and programs
(Black History Month, Emancipation Day, Leaders of Tomorrow, exhibit loan
program, tours, Annual General Meeting, etc.)
• Event and program planning and execution in coordination with the Board of
Directors
• Outreach
Strategic Planning, Grant Writing
• Write grant proposals and reports to support new and existing programs
• Maintain Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sports (MTCS) eligibility, Provincial
Heritage Organization (PHO) grant requirements
• Support internal communications including member newsletter/communications,
outreach communications and ongoing partnerships with staff
• Execute and assist in the planning of short and long-term goals
Communications and Community Outreach
• Lead liaison with OBHS membership
• Maintain media contacts
• Marketing communications to drive sponsorship and donations, and to build
membership
• Maintain active relationship with existing and future sponsors
• Build and cultivate alliances and partnerships with other organizations
• Oversee exhibit loan program
• Responsible for leading outreach for the calendar of events and programming
Financial Recordkeeping
• Bookkeeping – submission of payroll and all office generated revenues, grants
and event sales, bank deposits
• Regular reporting to the Board of Directors
• Provide support to the Treasurer on bookkeeping records for engagement
review/audit
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Business, Communications,
etc.)
• A minimum of 2 – 3 years of experience
• Demonstrated experience in management and project management
• Experience establishing, maintaining, and growing events and programs within
Black communities of the diverse African Diaspora in Canada
• Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office applications
• Strong and professional written and verbal communication skills, strong
interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks with deadlines and manage time effectively
• Bilingual (French/English) is an asset
SALARY
$60,000/year
HOURS
35-hours/week, 4-day work week (Tuesday – Friday), occasional additional
hours based on the programming schedule
